PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
"Our Journey through the Gardens"
We begin our journey through the gardens that have been created for us to study and remember the times we have had trying to perfect them. We will experience the beauty of learning to create terrific designs by demonstrating floral designs at each meeting, which will help us have a really great flower show in 2012. We will be celebrating our 50th anniversary in April with a luncheon and Design Program. We will tour two separate gardens as well as our own gardens. We will continue the Golden Days Project and Plant It Pink by planting daffodils and pink flowers in our gardens and in the Community Improvement projects we maintain. We will endeavor to provide rays of sunshine in the floral arrangements delivered to the recipients of our monthly Show and Tell continuing project. And finally, at the end of our journey through the gardens, we will enjoy a festival of trees and luncheon at our final meeting this year.

2011 News & Meetings
March - June 2011 Programs
On March 12, 2011 the Centralia Flower & Garden Club hosted another outstanding program at the public
library as part of our continuing series of free programs for our Garden Center Project. Kevin Alferman, representing Songbird Station and Gold Crest Distributing LLC, presented a fun, thorough program on
specific birds, their foods, nesting needs, feeder preferences, brood information, and more. He brought
many examples of feeders and feed that were passed around for everyone to see. At the end of his
presentation, attendees were invited to shop at a discount and many went home with new things.
Co-chairs for the Garden Center Project are Arlene Grace and Marjorie Motley. Arlene had a drawing
for 4 gourd houses which she made, and Kevin donated a Birds of Missouri Field Guide.

The Centralia ladies were treated to an excellent presentation by Arlene Grace, Master Gardener, National
Garden Consultant Life Member, and Environmental Awareness Chair for the club, on 'Staying Green'. She
covered types of energy saving, materials needed, kitchen equipment energy ratings, lighting, flooring,
insulation, heating and cooling. Arlene also brought many handouts that she received from the Conservation Department.
The club was further treated to a beautiful Tubular Design by member Shirley Heinrich.

front of City Hall.
On May 9 we will hold our regular monthly meeting to review our plant sale and projects.
On June 13, the club will travel to Harrisburg to tour the garden of Charlene Larkin who grows over 200
varieties of daylily. Charlene is a member of the American Hemerocallis Society. After the tour, we will
share a salad luncheon.
That covers our first half of the year. At each meeting, a member is presenting a specific floral design

Centralia Flower & Garden Club November Meeting
The Centralia Flower & Garden Club, member of FGCM, Central District and NGC, met November 15, 2010 at the City Hall Community Room for their regular meeting. The program, led by member and past FGCM President, Mary Ann Meador, was making pinecone wreaths and decorations, utilizing what Mother Nature has given us.
Also, the club held their annual Decorated Lunch Box auction which is a yearly fundraiser. As part of the business meeting, member Marjorie Motley demonstrated to the members how to make a Reflective Design, which was quite interesting and fun. Various committee reports were given about Horticulture, Habitat for Humanity, the flower boxes in the city square (which the club is going to fill with winter greens very soon), and plans for the club's 50th Anniversary Luncheon and celebration in April 2011.
The next meeting will be at the home of Dorothy Kaiser, December 13, 2010. It is the club's annual Christmas luncheon where the members exchange small gifts and Christmas cards and enjoy a formal luncheon. This year it will also be the installation of the new President Mary Frances George and the new board. This is a private celebration for club members only.

2010 FGCM Fall Board Meeting
5 members from Centralia attended the Fall Board Meeting in Jefferson City Nov. 7 - 9, 2010. A beautiful fall theme greeted everyone the first day, and was transformed into a Father Christmas wonderland for our banquet and gift exchange.
September/October 2010 Events
The end of September and beginning of October have been really busy for the Centralia Flower & Garden
Club. We finished Phase 1 of our Habitat Project and already have plans for Phase 2 for 2011. This has
been so rewarding and was an easy way to incorporate working with local people such as a landscaper.
We cleaned 2 miles of highway which has been a project for several years now.
The Club hosted our 12th in a series of Gardening related programs at the Centralia Library as part of our
Garden Center project. This was FUN WITH GOURDS, presented by Boonville Garden Club member
Sharon Walther. She is also a recognized merchant at the Columbia Farmers Market. She taught everyone
about the actual growing and care and marketing of gourds.

OCTOBER 2010 MEETING
At our October meeting at Karen Dutton's home, we first enjoyed a program organized by Karen with the
help of Arlene Grace, Shirley Heinrich and Joan Ball. We learned some history of how the Halloween
Pumpkin came into popularity, then Arlene showed some of her beautiful gourd creations from when
she had her own business in the area, Joan made a small replica of Ma & Pa Kettle (made of squash),
and Shirley created a hanging gourd floral arrangement as we watched. Karen ended it by showing her
plans for a triple pumpkin 'person' she is making for the Habitat family as well as a floating witch that
will hang from their porch.
We were then treated to a fabulous luncheon prepared and served by Karen, Arlene, Joan and Shirley. The business meeting followed with many reports and plans for finishing up current projects. Our next meeting
will be our annual Lunch box Auction, along with a workshop led by Mary Ann Meador for making pine cone wreaths and other beauties from our outdoor bounties.

2010 CENTRALIA FLOWER AND GARDEN CLUB PRESIDENT’S REPORT
FALL DISTRICT MEETING SEPTEMBER 10, 2010 FULTON, MO
Our theme for the year is “The Life Cycle of Nature Must Continue”. It has been our
goal as we continue to study the Missouri Wildflower Resolution to learn how to best
preserve Mother Nature’s Estate while we beautify the world around us using the
bounty already provided. We have completed this study.
Our new study for the year has been to have a member present and teach a floral
design at each meeting. This has been very helpful and enlightening and I hope
encourages more members to enter the design classes.
We relied heavily this year on our own members for program presentations and
workshops. We learned of the new plants available for 2010, the importance of
and how to preserve native grasses, went to the gardens of New Zealand through
the eyes of a gardener who did, celebrated Mother Nature at our Anniversary
Luncheon, learned to make terrariums, and how to propagate the beauty we
already have in our gardens.
We held our annual plant sale in May. The plants are a combination of ones from
our own gardens and plants grown by the high school students in their greenhouse.
In June, we toured 6 of our member gardens, learning techniques as well as
problems in maintaining them.
At the 2010 CD Fall Meeting Shirley Heinrich received a Life Membership from
Randy De Garmo for her outstanding membership! Randy was unable to attend
and Mary Francis George presented the pin.
In September we will travel to an Alpaca Ranch in New London to tour the farm
and learn first hand about an incredible kind of recycling…fur and waste. We will
also tour the gardens there. A picnic luncheon will be provided by committee.
We will work together in October and November in workshops led by members
to create beauty from everything we can collect from Mother Nature by working
with gourds and pumpkins in art, and making pine cone wreaths. At these
workshops we will enjoy lunch together.
In November we will create wonderful ‘lunch boxes’ to auction to each other as
a fundraiser.
Then in December, we will celebrate the holiday and install our new president.
The incredible highlight of our year came at the convention in St. Louis. Besides
winning numerous awards for our hard work, our own Dorothy Thompson received
the Award of Honor. She then was so honored at the Regional and National Level.
Needless to say we were ecstatic. Dorothy was feted in Centralia by her club and
her friends with a beautiful reception.
Our Garden Center at the library continues to grow with 3 more outstanding
programs so far this year, including a tour of the renowned Chance Rose Gardens.
We continue to maintain gardens around City Hall, fill the flower boxes in the City
Square, plant and maintain a beautiful area on the highway we call the Triangle.
In addition, we are helping a teacher and her class at the Middle School to create
gardens there.
We also continue to maintain our Blue Star Memorial at the cemetery.
Our newest project is to design and put in gardens for Habitat for Humanity at a
new home in Centralia. This will be ongoing for 2-3 years.
We participated in many creative ways in the Plant It Pink campaign, as well as
the Golden Days. We planted our downtown pots, filled flower beds at the middle
school, and have planned a 14’ bed at the Habitat , all filled with gold.
Last, but not least, we will begin this fall to landscape the memorial area at the
cemetery for Charter Member Winnie Fadler who passed away.
It has been a very busy, rewarding, and informational year for us, as well as gaining
3 new members. I am quite certain this trend will continue.

July Meeting - Terrariums
At our regular meeting July 12, member Karen Dutton instructed the club on making a luminary
design. It was so quiet while she worked that you could hear a pin drop...we were all
mesmerized. Karen is a true craftsman with flowers and creativity.
Our regular program July 12 was on making terrariums, which several of us did. Member
Oneda Roberts brought plants, containers, creek gravel to share as well as good instruction
on making the terrariums. Members brought a sack lunch and we had some quality sharing
time.

Member's Garden Tour held June 14, 2010
19 members and 1 guest of the Centralia Flower & Garden Club met at 8 am at Marjorie
Motley's house for a breakfast feast. The feast committee was Marjorie, Ruth Williams,
Vicki Mc Candless, Shirley Heinrich and Dorothy Thompson. After the feast, we braved
light rain and visited 6 member gardens. All were beautiful, innovative and gave all of us
so many new ideas for our own gardens. Some of the yards had low water areas and
many creative plantings became lovely gardens. It was a chance for us to ask questions,
divide a few plants, steal wonderful ideas from others and help solve some problem area
plantings.
We finished our tour at Dorothy Thompson's yard...most of us have beautiful daylilies in
our gardens that were courtesy of Dorothy. And, many of her plants were courtesy of
other Centralia Garden Clubbers. It's such a great way to build friendships as well as
gardens.
We then had our monthly meeting, enjoyed mint, orange and regular tea along with a
beautiful cake created by member Vicki McCandless. The cake was actually an edible
photograph of Dorothy taken at the convention when she was awarded the Award of
Honor. What a delicious way to end our rainy morning.

Dorothy Thompson - NGC, CR & FGCM Award of Honor Member
On Sunday May 23, 2010, the members of the Centralia Flower & Garden Club hosted a
special reception for Dorothy Thompson, 30+ yr member and winner of this year's FGCM
Award of Honor, Central Region Award of Honor, as well as NGC Award of Honor. This
was a thrill for everyone involved, and totally overwhelmed Dorothy.
Besides members, local friends of different organizations that Dorothy attends, as well as
FGCM members from other cities in Missouri were there. Dorothy's daughter from Iowa
was also there.
Member Marjorie Motley read the biographical background she wrote when she nominated
her long time friend for this award. She then congratulated her for her State award, the
Region award, and then announced that she was giving her the pin for the National award.
Dorothy had no idea, and neither did her daughter...both were totally shocked. What a
wonderful moment for all of us.
The refreshments were made by the members, highlighted by the beautiful cake with
Dorothy's edible photograph on it, edible butterflies, and petits fours (also with edible
butterflies). Member Vicki McCandless was the artist for these creations. The decorations
were huge paper flowers in floor pots, and 4 original creations in the windows made with
bases that were from the convention in St. Louis. Member Dorothy Kaiser created these.
Centralia boasts a previous winner of all three Awards of Honor, Winnie Fadler, charter
member, who passed away in 2009. There is no other club with this kind of recognition.
We truly belong to the best.

A Message from the President
Happy 2010 to gardeners everywhere! In Centralia Flower & Garden Club we have many
new plans for the year. After celebrating with a spectacular Christmas Luncheon and party
in December 2009, we are ready for new challenges.
This year, we have new projects. With the passing of our last remaining charter member,
Winnie Fadler, a large collection from the public is going to ensure a beautiful landscape
memorial in the Centralia Cemetery. Members are working on the plans and will secure
approval from the city soon and work will begin.
We are actively planting daffodils everywhere we can for the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
projects, "Golden Days" and "Planting it Pink". We are going to do landscaping for the
first time in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity in Centralia. Plans will be drawn up
and submitted to FGCM for additional funding.
At each meeting we are continuing our studies of the Missouri Wildflower Resolution to
help in preserving the rare, endangered and watch list plants. This is part of our theme.
We are adding a monthly study of Flower Design, according to the Handbook for Flower
Shows, we continue to beautify the City Square of Centralia as well as a garden area on
Highway 22, we will have our annual member garden tour, plant sale, anniversary luncheon
and are working with a group of students at the middle school who wanted to establish
landscape gardens at the school with our help.
This year we are having several workshops at our meetings which will promote not only
gardening, but working together as a group of friends. It's going to be a GREAT YEAR!

"Growing, Cooking and Enjoying Herbs"
On Thursday August 20, more than 30 people attended a program at the
Centralia Public Library that was hosted by the Centralia Flower & Garden
Club, member of Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Inc. in Central District.
“Growing, Cooking and Enjoying Herbs” was the title of the program which
was presented by Barb Kribbs, Heart of Missouri Master Gardener.
Each attendee received a very large and inclusive booklet that included recipes,
growing and drying herbs, herb gardens, cultivation notes, and many hints and
shortcuts. The booklet was prepared by the Extension Department of the
University of Missouri in conjunction with Master Gardener projects.
Barb passed around many fresh herbs for the audience to see, touch, and smell
as she explained their use in cooking. Many recipes were explained, and a couple
of examples were passed through the audience. People were asked to describe
some of the ways they use herbs in their homes, and several named herbs they
have in abundance and would be willing to share.
There were 5 door prizes which included plants, seeds, and gloves. All were
invited to taste herb tea, herb lemonade, and pesto. The final treat was lavender
ice cream.
This program was part of the continuing series hosted by the Centralia Flower
& Garden Club in partnership with the Library, and for which the club has won
national and state recognition in the past 3 years according to guidelines set
out by the National Garden Clubs.

picture is on the cover of the show schedule. Richard donated the copyright to our club to use as
a fundraiser. The members are selling 'donation chances' for the actual framed painting...the winner
will be announced at the annual Christmas Luncheon of the Centralia Flower and Garden Club in
December. The chances are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We will have the chances available everywhere
we go from now until December, including District meetings, Fall Board meeting, etc. Anyone interested
can also reach us through the website, or email, or phone.
Our July meeting was held at the home of Carla Coleman, Master Gardener, of Monroe
City. Her garden (and there are too many to name, each with a distinct theme), was a
true fantasy. The tour was followed by a wonderful tailgate luncheon by club members
(actually served from the tailgate) and enjoyed in Carla's beautiful garden. Everyone
present felt this was one of our finest meetings in every way.
In August our program will be quite exciting...Jamie Ebbesmeyer of the Conservation
Dept will be talking to us about the benefits of bats. We will be ending our meeting
with a demonstration by the Flower Show Committee of an arrangement from start to
finish.
We will also go over the Schedule again, all the rules and regs, etc, to be sure we are
all ready for the big show in September. We are excited about our NATURE'S PALETTE,
and hope many of you reading this will attend. We will be using some of our newer
judges, so that part is really exciting.
I have included a photo of the beautiful Moonstone Rose that I was lucky enough to win
at the state convention in Sedalia....it is really a wonderful rose and is thriving!!
We are also working on plans for a beautiful memorial for our departed member
Winnie Fadler. We hope to have it near our Blue Star Memorial at the Centralia
Cemetery but are awaiting approval from the City of Centralia. More news on that later.
